Adult Education

Triton College offers courses in English as a Second Language (ESL), as well as High School Equivalency courses that help you prepare for your GED®, TASC, and HiSET exams.

Please click on one of our Adult Education (AE) course listings on the left for more information about the course and instructions on how to enroll.

Requirements to Enroll:  

  • Must be an Illinois resident
  • Provide a picture ID with current address
  • Must be at least 16 years old and not enrolled in high school
  • Classes are not intended for individuals on temporary and student visas

English as a Second Language (ESL)*

English as a Second Language (ESL) courses are designed to help non-native English speakers develop reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.

There are 7 levels of ESL instruction, from basic to advanced.

Classes are offered in either a 15 week session or 10 week session.

15 week classes start in January and August and meet twice a week. Morning classes are offered on Mondays and Wednesdays. Evening classes are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

10 week skills classes are offered throughout the year. Morning classes are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Evening classes are offered on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Morning classes take place from 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM.

Evening classes take place from 6:00 PM – 9:30 PM.

ESL students interested in developing their computer skills may register for a Computer Basics class, available in English and  Spanish. Classes are offered throughout the year.

Citizenship

Are you thinking of becoming a citizen of the United States?
The first step is to be prepared for the U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) test, which consists of an oral interview and a written test on U.S. history, and federal and state government functions.

If you speak, read and write English fluently, you are ready to fill out your citizenship application right away. If you do not, Triton's Adult Education department offers English as a Second Language (ESL) classes throughout the year.

Our citizenship class will prepare you for the citizenship examination and the interview. Classes meet eight consecutive Saturday mornings. The class is free of charge

Come to the Adult Education office located in the A Building, Room 205 to enroll.

High School Equivalency Program*

High School Equivalency program courses are designed to prepare students to successfully complete the high school equivalency examinations, including the GED®, HiSET®, and TASC.

We offer various levels of language arts and math courses to help students gain the knowledge and skills needed to prepare for a high school equivalency exam.

The class schedule is as follows:
  Language Arts
  Mondays & Wednesdays
  9:00 AM – 12:30 PM or 6:00 – 9:30 PM

  Mathematics
  Tuesdays & Thursdays
  9:00 AM – 12:30 PM or 6:00 – 9:30 PM

Students may take either one class or two at the same time.

Constitution

We also offer a Constitution course throughout the year for students who have not passed the Constitution Test in high school. The class is taught over five Saturdays from 9 AM – 12 PM.

College Transitions Options

Scholarships:
The following scholarships are available for Triton College adult basic education students, who have graduated from their respective programs. Contact us for qualification information, application process and deadline.

  • Board of Trustees Scholarship - available for students who have successfully completed Level 6 of the ESL program or successfully passed the high school equivalency test and received their completion certificate.
  • Westlake Scholarship - private scholarship available for students who have completed Level 5 of the English Language Acquisition program or successfully passed the high school equivalency test and are interested in pursuing a career in allied health.

Bridge Courses:
The goal of the bridge program is to gradually prepare students to succeed in postsecondary education and career-path employment.

Written Communication Courses for Non-Native English Speakers
Our writing communication classes for non-native speakers help prepare you for college writing courses and improve your writing skills. Students who have completed the ESL programming are eligible to register.

We offer two levels of writing transitions courses:
- E65 Basic Written Communication Skills for Non-native English Speakers: This course exposes students to the requirements of the English composing process, developing ideas, editing, proofreading and writing a full length paragraph.
- E66 Written Communication Skills for Non-native English Speakers: This course explores the English composing process by helping develop ideas, edit, proofread written work and write full-length paragraphs and essays.
